Flamenco Fun and Spanish Culture

Learn Flamenco the way men and women in Spain dance it at celebrations and parties in their everyday life. Rumba Flamenca is a fun, social Flamenco dance of Latin-American and Afro-Caribbean origins that sounds similar to Salsa.  In this 10 week course you will also discover Flamenco beyond the stage and the fascinating roles it plays in people's lives within Spanish culture. No special dance attire, special shoes or previous dance experience needed. In English.

Thursdays from 6.30 pm to 8 pm.

 

Creative Writing Workshop

A ten-week writing workshop, both theoretical and practical in nature, for those who want to write, but don’t know how to begin or for those who started, stopped and now want to continue. Although the course will focus on fiction and nonfiction, particular emphasis will be placed on fictional narrative. Students will also be introduced to the following genres: chronicles, personal essays, fictional short stories, autobiographies, as well as travelogues. A reading program and weekly assignments, as well as firm, helpful feedback will be provided. The objective of this course is to learn to use narrative tools that will allow students to discover and polish their own narrative voice.

Learn Spanish through the creation of your own personal comic book.

To create a comic book is to tell a story with texts and images. From the creation of the characters to the development of the script, we find many opportunities to learn lots of words in Spanish and how to use them in a more creative way than in textbooks.

How should my characters talk? What kind of clothes do they wear? Which locations should I use and what can we find there? All these questions have answers in Spanish!

We will learn visual storytelling basics, and then will be ready to create our comic book from beginning to end in Spanish.

What are the purposes of this course?

- To develop communication skills in Spanish.
- To learn Spanish in a more creative and different way.
- To create interesting characters with personality and stories that engage the reader.
- To exchange experiences and ideas with fellow students in Spanish.
- To learn how to communicate visually.
- To complete our own personal comic book in Spanish.

Casual Fridays 

Chat in Spanish over a glass of wine! Moderated by Spanish native instructors, you will further your knowledge of the language in a relaxed atmosphere. Each of these evenings will focus around a topic related to Spanish & Latin American culture. All levels of Spanish are welcome. Tutors Yurién and Sarah will be present to assist with your Spanish and answer any questions you may have. Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Prices*: $15 for ICNY students & members (plus one free guest), $20 for non-members
*Refunds must be requested by the Monday prior to the Casual Friday with a $5 processing fee. Minimum of 10 students, maximum of 30. Registration only by telephone and in-person. Payment by check or credit card. Students who bring a free guest must indicate his/her name. Guest must be a non-member to be invited.

Texts and Images

Advanced conversation course (Level C) that will explore diverse cultural artifacts (paintings, photography, advertising, short-films, literary texts, etc.) that come from various authors, periods and traditions of the Hispanic world. This interdisciplinary course will analyze and establish the relationships between different mediums of art. Students will improve their linguistic skills by participating in class discussions and in their oral presentations on the subject.
One Friday, class will take place at the MoMA (Diego Rivera: Murals for The Museum of Modern Art. Time and date will be decided by the group). The course will be taught by three instructors: Celia Pérez-Ventura, Yurién Ribot & Marlenys Villamar. 

Spanish Cinema and Conversation

This course serves as a historical and critical survey of Spanish cinema and culture from the 1950s to the present. By watching and analyzing fragments of different films, students will strengthen their comprehension, vocabulary and conversational skills through discussions on contemporary Spanish cinema.

Book Club

In this advanced conversation course students will read at home and then discuss in class a selection of essays, short stories or novels by well-known writers. Students will improve their language skills while learning about the literary production of these important writers and are encouraged to use the Instituto Cervantes Library to prepare course material.

Conversations About Art

This course will focus on the practice of Spanish conversation on the subject of art. By observing and commenting on different images of works of art from various artistic periods, students will improve their linguistic skills by taking part in guided discussions on the subject of Spanish culture with an emphasis on the visual arts in Spain.

A Stroll Through Spanish & Spanish-American Literature

In this course students will be able to strengthen and develop their reading comprehension and their writing skills, as well as their linguistic ability through the analysis of the most representative works and authors of Spanish and Spanish- American literature. In addition, students will get acquainted with the most important literary movements, as well as the different socio-cultural aspects that helped them come to be.
