Use and Comparison of the Past Tenses in Spanish
This workshop will analyze the main difficulties encountered by students when using the past tenses in Spanish. Tense morphology, as well as their main functions will be reviewed, paying special attention to the uses of the past tenses of the indicative mood in Spain and in Latin America. Minimum level required: A2.3.
Subjunctive I: Expressing Opinions, Emotions and Probability
The objective is for students to be able to express their opinions, tastes and emotions in Spanish, correctly using some of the available clauses. We will be focusing on those that work with the subjunctive. The workshop is divided into three parts. In the first part, we will review some clauses used to express opinion ([no] creo que + indicativo/subjuntivo, [no] pienso que + indicativo/subjuntivo…). In the second part, we will study the use of the subjunctive within clauses that express emotions or moods (me gusta, me da miedo...). Lastly, we will go over some clauses that express probability (ojalá, quizá, tal vez, es posible que…). Minimum level required: B1.2.
Subjunctive II: The Subjunctive and the Past Tenses
The workshop will review the use of the past tenses in the subjunctive mood. First, we will review the past-tense morphology. Then, we will review their use within certain clauses, paying attention to conditional clauses (Si fuera…) and contrast clauses (Aunque tuviera…). Minimum level required: B2.1.

The course focuses on the communication skills and technical vocabulary required for reception and admission of patients, diagnostic interviews, case description, and institutional procedures and processes, focusing on the varied terminology used in Latin America.

Designed for Spanish speakers, this course helps students improve their grammar and vocabulary levels as well as to expand their knowledge about the culture of Spanish speaking countries. All the class work will be integrated through the reading and discussion of different kinds of visual and written material about current relevant issues in Spain or Latin America and the Hispanic culture in the United States.
This course is designed for superior level students that have already done or want to do consecutive interpretation in general. It focuses on the three main stages of the work of the consecutive interpreter: understanding of the original message of the speaker, immediate analysis of its content and the rendering of the content of the message in another language by taking notes that reflect ideas, more than words, as an aid to strengthen the memory skills of the consecutive interpreter.

Students will improve their speaking skills and become more proficient in Spanish. Students will discuss current events, brainstorm to solve problems, participate in role-plays, and prepare presentations to develop vocabulary, reinforce grammatical structures, and utilize new expressions and colloquialisms. Excerpts from movies and news clips will be used as springboards for discussion.

Through this dynamic class that entails watching movies and television programs in Spanish, students will improve their listening skills. Students will participate in activities before, during, and after the screenings and learn strategies to boost their receptive listening comprehension skills and their productive oral skills, which involves correct pronunciation.

This Communicative Grammar course aims at strengthening the students’ knowledge of the grammar in order to use it correctly when speaking the language. It is based on specific items or topics that tend to prove complicated for intermediate and advanced students. The goal of the course is to learn grammar through authentic uses of the language in order to reinforce the theoretical and practical knowledge of the language.

We offer this course for advanced students who want to improve their knowledge of Spanish grammar and learn the techniques to write better in Spanish, by enhancing their repertoire of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. It will include topics such as punctuation, clarity of written expression and elegance in the use of the language, the art of writing and the various writing techniques necessary to achieve this goal.
